In the early 1970s, an extraordinary group of beautifully made pottery began to appear in the Deming and Columbus areas of New Mexico, and other areas of the Southwest. It was being brought across the border from a village named "Mata Ortiz" in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico.  In the next 20 years, the pottery of Mata Ortiz would be appearing in high-level galleries in Santa Fe and elsewhere.  Museums began mounting exhibits and extolling the creativity of these master potters.  A potter named Juan Quesada had been the creator of these first pieces and was the spark that ignited the flame in his tiny village of Mata Ortiz—much like Maria Martinez did in her pueblo of San Ildefonso in New Mexico.

The Ugly Otter and his Beautiful Wife traveled to the village of Mata Ortiz, and visited with Juan and his wife in his home.  A this time, a nice pot similar to the ones shown below, if it were made by Juan, would  likely be worth $25,000 or more.   He only made them "to order" in his later years and even then required a one year advance notice!  We (The Ugly Otter and his Beautiful Wife) were in Mata Ortiz twice, the last time a few years ago.   We will not return until the Mexican Government can get some control over the Cartels.  We have been told that Juan has since retired, and is no longer making pottery.

By example, Juan trained others in the village to make this high quality pottery.  This brought the village out of poverty and is providing a fine source of income for the native artists of the village.  Some of their works are shown on this page.  To read more about our trip to this unique village, Click this Link .

Attention!  The three pots below are chipped, or cracked, and weatherbeaten.  They are old Casas Grandes pots.  We have seen pots like these broken into shards of maybe 2" X 2" and the shards then sold for from $10 to $5 each in tourist traps!  These would be good for display, or even landscaping in a desert motif.
